In the garden

Last week R spotted a 3' California Kingsnake in the front yard and snapped this photo.

California Kingsnake

I've never seen a snake in the garden, so maybe it was the record temperatures that brought him out? Not sure... no biggie as long as it stays out of the house. Kingsnakes eat are known to eat birds(!).

This weekend we bought our 3rd hummingbird feeder of the summer. We had 2 disappointing purchases at the local hardware store--the first was defective, fell off its hanger and broke resulting in a sticky mess, and the second one was designed poorly. This time we went to the Wild Bird Center in Los Gatos at the advice of Bill & Spinnity and purchased the HummZinger Ultra by Aspects.

It's the best feeder ever. It's easy to clean, the nectar level is easy to see, it's sturdy and well made, and there's a built in ant-moat. Our hummers were without a feeder for 2 weeks, but they found this one right away.

I sat near the feeder with my camera hoping to get a shot or two of a hummer feeding, and I got what I was looking for... and more!

  • That's so cool! That hummingbird sure got a good look at you. My parents had a female hummingbird that liked to try and stare them down through the kitchen window. I decided that it's a sign that they like the feeder!
