Adventures in knitting cutting

That's all I needed. Instead of hand sewing the steek (I got one inch into it and thought there must be a better way), I did a quick search and found various instructions on how to machine stitch steeks.
(Now that I'm revisiting the pages, I realize that I reinforced the steek closer to the cut edge than is shown on the sites. Grrrr. That's okay. I'll go back to the sewing machine tonight.)
Anyway, I sewed, found the scissors, and took a deep breath.
Ready to steek
OMG I'm cutting my knitting
OMG I cut my knitting
It was more disturbing than I thought. After cutting, I had to leave the house for a few hours.
When I got back (after 5PM) I admired my first steek and raised a glass to all FI/stranded colorwork knitters. Cheers!
Post-steek therapy

Thank you for posting this!! I'm knitting a Meg Swansen cardigan for my grandfather-in-law that has to be steeked and I'm totally freaked out by it. Now I feel much better. I'll have to go buy a bottle of wine to drink after I'm done cutting!!

I'm about to order the kit. Why bother cutting the tube at all? Wondering if I can do the edges differently and avoid the sewing.

Hi CricketB,
You didn't leave an email address, so I hope you see this response.
You don't need to cut your knitting. You can sew a zipper in at the top, sew the bottom closed, and be done with it.
I bought the kit because of the steek--I've never done it before and saw this as an opportunity to experience the thrill (and terror) of a steek on a smaller project.
