CA State Fair 2012 - Part 1, Fiber Arts

Braving 104 degree temperatures we went to the California State Fair yesterday. Actually, we knew it was hot, but didn't know how hot it was until we left. Thank goodness. If I saw the temperature, I think I would have felt even worse.

But, it was a fun day. Mutare came with me and we met Lisa Souza, her husband, and their 2 grandkids at CalExpo. Grandkids 1 & 2 were real troopers, there were no complaints (except from this adult), and there was just one request for water.

I took a lot of photos, so I'll post in installments. First up, the fiber related entries in the Creative Arts Competition--

We found my hank of handspun displayed nicely. This is a 2-ply yarn spun by yours truly from Lisa Souza Zen fiber in the South Pacific colorway.

The Haapsalu Shawl was draped over a stand. I have a difficult time duplicating the true color of this item in photos, it's either too yellow or in this case it's too blue. The yarn is Zephyr and the color is called "Bottle Green". The dark color masks the intricate lace pattern which is one of the reasons why this entry received an Honorable Mention.

The Knotty Knitters of Auburn, Colfax, Placer County had an ambitious entry again this year. If I remember correctly, they had an installment of knitted bras in the Fine Arts Competition in a prior year. This year they tackled the US Presidents and the Royal Wedding. The last figure in their display is Mitt Romney, complete with an Etch-a-Sketch under his arm. Do you think the group was making a statement?

ETA: Thanks to Irene from The Knotty Knitters who let me know that they did not make the Royal Wedding party. Oops! I didn't make note of who made that piece, sorry about that.

  • Thanks for posting a photo of my blue Krokus - it's better than the photos I took! Your shawl is beautiful, and the display did not show it off to its best advantage. I found that many of the lace items were folded or draped, masking the detail. This is my first year at the Fair. Maybe we can have some influence on how they display items if we write to the organizers.

  • Your shawl looks great. I just submitted my application to enter in our state fair in October.

  • Hi. Thank you for taking photos of the knitted presidents plus one candidate. In her enthusiasm, our instructor thought it would be fun to knit Mitt Romney. It does not represent the political opinion of our group as a whole. Also we did not knit the Royal Family. That person did a beautiful job, and it was fun to look at them.
