Good news and bad news
Good news:
Barack Obama will be our next President! Not news to any of you as I'm quite late to the blogging party.
Bad news, unfortunate news, unbelievable, sad, shameful news:
California voters approved changing the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
I don't get it. Did the smear/fear campaign frighten people that much? Do people not understand that discrimination is wrong? Whatever drove them to do it, 52% voted yes. Some day we'll reach a tipping point on this issue--I think we're close but unfortunately we're not there yet.
All but one Bay Area county voted to defeat the measure. I suppose that's something.

Horrible. I can't believe it. I read a piece online that said that the high African-American turn out for Obama may have doomed it (they voted largely in favor of Prop 8). Talk about an unintended consequence!

It's like one step forward, one step back.

I am just incredibly sad about this. I think that they worded the proposition in a slightly confusing way (at least for me trying to figure out how to vote from that info alone)- I had to double check a couple of times that I was voting the right way. I wish I could say with some confidence that that is why it failed to pass. sigh. The Bay Area really is it's own little wonderful world...

Its a real shame that we have this awful bigoted measure passing in California at the same time as the wonderful achievement of electing Obama to the presidency.

I really think some people are too judgmental to see it as discrimination. There are also those who can't see why same sex couples can't be happy with civil unions. Although, you'd think those people wouldn't have a problem voting no on the prop.
It's frustrating.
But, YAY OBAMA!

very sad indeed. Although when shown a ballot paper and having seen one online I did find the question confusing and I do think that for bears of very little brain it may have lead them to tick the wrong box.

Well, I was one of the few Bay Area people that did not vote for Obama (no I didn't vote for McCain either, but I did vote), but I still find it ironic and sad that Prop 8 passed. I thought "separate but equal" was found to be unconstitutional decades ago. Apparently, some people want to forget that.
But, at least we've made progress from to 64% approval of the voters when the state law (that the courts overturned in May) was passed.
