Fingers crossed
There's a ray of hope for the dead iPod.
Moirae suggested,
A quick search turned up "Sad iPod + Tenacity = Happy iPod" in the iPod Hacks Discussion Forums.
The suggestion is to put the iPod in disk mode, connect it to a Windows computer, and then run the chkdsk utility. It makes sense 'cause the iPod is just a drive, right? Boy, I hope this works.

Try googling "hack into your ipod" and see if any of their tricks work first.

Good luck!
I had to hack into my ipod once - I forget which one of the funky icons I got, but it worked.

Best of luck! My ipod's been holding up for 2 years, but Becky went through 4 iPod photo's in 1.5 years. That's why we always spend the extra $50 for the Apple Care. You shouldn't have to, but the fact of the matter is - Apple hardware sucks eggs.
What else would one get if not an iPod? Is there really anything else comparable?

:(. I wonder if this also happens to the nano's flash memory and possibly the upcoming iPhone. I'd be seriously peeved if the iPhone had a sad face on it.
