Tour de Fleece - still spinning

I've been spinning the Merino on my drop spindle using the Navajo Ply-on-the-Fly method that I learned from Michael Wade.

I'm taking a chunk of fiber, about 1/8 oz, and spinning singles. Then when I get to the end of the fiber, I butterfly the singles onto my hand and Navajo ply in sections.

Here I am ready to ply:

I've taken 21 39 yds of yarn off the spindle so far. It's slow going, but who's in a rush? This isn't a race or anything... oh, wait a minute.

Ready or not, TdF

Can you believe this post isn't about food or the garden? Shocking, I know. I'm preparing for Tour de Fleece that starts on Saturday. Here are my initial goals:

  • Spin every day the cyclists ride on the tour.
  • Finish spinning the fiber currently on my drop spindles.
First up, wool on the Jorn Piel Nordic Spindle. The fiber was given to me by a friend and from the looks of it, I think it is Merino from Ashland Bay. This is spun using the Ply-on-the-Fly method. I learned PotF from Michael Wade on Day 16 of TdF 2011, so it's fitting that I continue with it for TdF 2012.

The second spindle is from KCL Woods and has Zen Top Merino-Tussah Silk-Bamboo from Lisa Souza. Both were purchased at Stitches West this year and this target yarn will be a fine 2-ply.

What are your goals for TdF 2012?

Planning ahead: Tour de Fleece 2012

Mutare reminded me that Tour de Fleece is coming up. Spinning?! My wheel has been empty since I plied the Zen singles back in March. TdF starts June 30, so I have some time to plan. Will you be spinning in the Tour de Fleece this year? If so, what will you be spinning?

Tour de Fleece Day 16

Today I took a break from the Lendrum and took a spinning class. This was a raffle prize that my sister won at the Grand Opening for A Verb For Keeping Warm, a private 2 hour session with Michael Wade. She generously asked if it could be a 1 hour session for 2 people and when she got the okay, invited me along. Now how great is that?

But before the session started, we stopped at the shop that just opened next door to AVFKW, James & the Giant Cupcake. We sampled Love Potion and Salt Sea Caramel, then I got a box of four to go.

Cupcakes

Zingo, I was high on chocolate and icing and ready to spin!

Grace and I narrowed down the list of topics to bottom whorl/Turkish spindle spinning, horizontal drafting, Navajo plying on a spindle and Navajo plying on the fly. What a great session! We saw a variety of Turkish spindles and talked about the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of each design, I learned how to wind a cop properly, and Michael talked about different ways to initiate the spin.

The horizontal drafting was very cool. With a slight modification it made controlling the twist easier for me and I was able to handle my slippery Merino-bamboo blend better and not have my drop spindle drop to the floor.

I had never Navajo plied on a spindle before, so seeing how it was done and practicing a bit was very helpful. But the last technique totally blew me away--Navajo Ply on the Fly. You don't spin singles first and then transfer the singles off the spindle before plying. You start with singles and end up with plied yarn on your spindle. It's like magic. I'm going to finish spinning the Merino-Bamboo using this method.

If you want to learn cool drop spinning techniques, check the class schedule at A Verb for Keeping Warm. Michael is a great teacher and I recommend him highly.

I may be a spindle spinner yet. (Note, this is my first blog post tagged with the word "spindle".)

Thank you Grace & Michael, I had a great time and learned a lot!

Tour de Fleece Day 11

I thought for sure Bobbin 6 would be full on Sunday, but I just wasn't able to spend that much time with my wheel. After a day of rest, I was re-energized and able to finish the bobbin tonight.

Front to back: Bobbin 6 finished today, bobbin 5, bobbin 4.

I'll let #6 rest overnight and will ply these singles tomorrow. 652 gms of fiber have been spun and there's only 260 gms left to go.

Tour de Fleece Day 7

It didn't occur to me that all of the posts about singles would look the same. I guess that's what happens when you spin 2 pounds of fiber. Oh well, it's a heck of a lot of spinning and I'm going to celebrate it in my blog. So there.

Another day, another bobbin!

Tour de Fleece Day 5

Today I finished bobbin 4 that I started yesterday. To go from this:

Bobbin 4 on Day 4

to this:

Bobbin 4 on Day 5

Took over an hour. Sheesh.

Now all my spinning bobbins are full so you know what that means--it's time to ply!

Tour de Fleece Day 4

I wasn't able to finish the 4th bobbin today, but that's okay. I still met my goal of spinning every day.

Tour de Fleece Day 3

I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to finish today's bobbin and still have light to take a photo. That was close.

Tour de Fleece Day 2

Each bobbin holds ~100 gms, so there will be 9 bobbins of singles. That's daunting, but I finished another today.

Tour de Fleece Day 1

Let the spinning begin!

This year I'm tackling 2 pounds of Ashland Bay Merino Tussah Top that I bought at Stitches West a few years ago. The target yarn is 12 wpi 3-ply. A handspun, hand knit sweater is in my future.

TdF update

I've been spinning every day of the Tour, some days more than others. But using the fast flyer, it adds up quickly--to date I've spun a total of 9.5 ounces of fiber.

4 oz of Out of Step Dyeworks Superwash Merino/Bamboo:

Dagon 3-ply Fingering Wt

and 5.5 oz Superwash BFL that I dyed (this is 5.3 oz, the rest is on the wheel):

Potluck - Cobbler

I'd like to finish the 3rd bobbin of the BFL and ply it all before the tour ends, but realistically that probably won't happen. Next week will be a busy one. That's okay, spinning close to 12 oz of local/indie dyed fiber and getting to know my fast flyer will mean I've met my goals. Keep those wheels turning!

Potluck anyone?

I've been trying my hand at dyeing, some of which I've blogged about, most of which I haven't. I tried hot pour dyeing last weekend. It sounded easy enough--heat up some fiber in water, add colors, poke, cook, cool, rinse, done.

8 oz of fiber + heat + dye:

Hot pour dyeing

The results were less than thrilling. Trust me, they look better in braids.

Potluck - Cobbler

Potluck - Cobbler

I didn't realize that the yellow traveled to the bottom of the pot and spread farther than I intended. The top bump is heavy yellow/red and the bottom bump is heavy yellow/blue. My first thought was, "Overdye." But then I thought if I made a 3-ply with all 8 ounces, it could turn into something I like.

Stage 7 of Tour de Fleece Stage is promising. Most of Bobbin 1 looks like this (with more yellow):

But the end of the bobbin looks like this:

Bobbin 1 of 3

This might work. If it doesn't, I can always throw it back into the dye pot, right?

Go! TdF Prologue

The Tour de France starts today and as the premiere riders make their way through Rotterdam (Go Team Radioshack!), spinners around the world will spin with them in the Tour de Fleece.

This is the first year I'm participating and I'm spinning for Team Spinnity and Team Lendrum. My #1 goal is to spin everyday. Period. It could be for 5 minutes or 2 hours, but work the fiber every day. The second goal is to spin fiber from local and/or indie dyers. The third goal is to work through as much stash fiber as I can without hurting myself. If I can get the hang of it, I'd also like to do all of the above using my fast flyer.

Here is some of the fiber I have to choose from:

Pigeonroof Studios roving
50/50 Superwash Merino/Silk
Colorway: Morocco

Colorway: watered silk

Lisa Souza BFL Wild Things

plus much more!

The first bump to spin comes from Amy Klimt's Out of Step Dyeworks.

I bought the fiber from Amy at the Oakland Fiber Festival last weekend where she had a show special, buy fiber or yarn and get a free stitch marker made by DecorNoir. I got the last yarn monster eye. (Score!)
