It's Hand Knit Friday. What hand knits do you have on today?

At this month's Knitspiration Knitting Guild of Silicon Valley meeting we discussed what to do with handpainted yarns--managing pooling, flashing, color changes, etc.. The socks I'm wearing today make use of a technique that deals with color variations quite well if the color runs are an appropriate length for the entrelac rectangles.

Ugh. I really need to take a better photo of these socks.

2007-02: Mineshaft Socks

Mineshaft socks .

Yarn: 2+ hanks Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Mineshaft
Needles: Addi Turbo circular US1.5/2.5mm;
Pattern: 88st cuff; tubular cast-on; alternating rounds of *ktbl, k1, ktbl, p1* and *k3, p1*; fits men's size 15

Finally, a photo that shows Mineshaft colorway. These are the first SO socks that I've made with a heel flap and gusset. He put them on for the photo shoot and didn't want to take them off. Always a good sign.

Turn turn turn

SO's socks in LL Mineshaft have reached a major milestone, the heel turn. Here's heel flap #1

and heel flap #2.

Ugh. LL pooling strikes again.

I noticed that on sock #1 the lighter color was worked on the right side of the heel flap and the darker colors were worked on the wrong side. Hmmmm.... what if I ripped out the heel flap, knit halfway around the sock and started the heel flap again?

Better! It even matches sock #1 in a mirror-image-kind-of-way.

Socks for the Harlot's visit

Yarn Harlot will be here in less than 2 days so I had to get some socks on the needles. And not just any socks, Entrelac socks.

After my wonderful experience with Lorna's Laces and the A Step Above pattern, I rummaged through the stash and pulled out the Mixed Berries that I bought from Cookie.

Perfect, right? Wrong.

I get the distinct impression that this yarn wants to be Pomatomus, Hedera, or perhaps Baudelaire, but definitely not entrelac. Silly me, I should have known.

Further digging in the bin turned up a hank of STR lightweight in Velvet Moon. Look how the colors line up in each rectangle. Freaky man.

Pattern: A Step Above, Knitter's 75 Summer 2004

I'm not sure I'm sold on this colorway with this pattern. I may swatch Moss Agate and see how that looks.

Either way I'll have a small project to keep me occupied from afternoon into evening on Saturday when I'll be one of the many (many) knitters anxious to have some quality time with Stephanie. Wish me luck!

The Cookie Factor

I followed Cookie's lead and ordered cashmere samples from Colourmart.

Wow. The mini-hank of washed cashmere is so soft. Now I want to buy more, but it's going to have to wait.

You see, I also purchased yarn from Cookie during her destashing sale:

L-R: Stacy Charles Rondo, Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock, Artfibers Tao

And there's one more purchase coming up--a Silver Reed LK-150. Now I don't think the Cookie Factor has had much of an influence on this purchase because I've been thinking of getting one ever since I knit the blanks for dye-o-rama and the CTH design contest winnings are funding the deal. But then again, her destashing sale was to raise money for a knitting machine. Perhaps it works on a subliminal level as well. That could be trouble! ;-)

2006-11: ASA #3

Another pair, finished 2 weeks ago during a trip to Pismo Beach. These are easily my favorite ASAs and it's all because of the Lorna's Laces.

Yarn: Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock, Camo

Loving Lorna's Laces

Spinnity has been working on another pair of A Step Above socks (ASA), this time in LL's Tuscany. I've been meaning to make this pattern again. In fact I had one failed attempt last year because the yarn I chose had color runs that were too short, resulting in a muddled look.

As I was admiring Spinnity's socks and the pairing of the yarn with the pattern--no surprise there, the pattern was written for LL for goodness sakes--I remembered that I have some LL in my stash.

So instead of finishing Threepenny, I'm knitting entrelac socks.

This is my first experience with Lorna's Laces and I absolutely love it.

Plan B

I'm shirking the Pomatomus toe-up challenge and am executing Plan B, choosing a different yarn. (Thanks for the brainstorming session Cookie, but I'm taking the easy way out.)

I ran across a photo of Pearl's Pomatomus socks in Lorna's Laces. She said had plenty of yarn leftover.

So this morning I went shopping for sock yarn--in my stash. From the suitable candidates--

Elann's Sock It To Me Colori in Seadrifter,

Lorna's Laces in Camo,

I chose the StrickSpaß Superba.

But I should finish Alice or Threepenny before starting a new project. Should.

You could always do wristlets with the leftover Koigu or add to the stash for a Koigu Klimt scarf. I also like Cookie's idea for a solid toe.

And I see there has been progress on 3-penny. Any recent pics or update?

Actually, the Koigu is not leftover yarn. The full hanks don't have enough yardage to knit Pomatomus as the pattern is written. I'll save the Koigu for a future project.

Threepenny has been on hold in favor of Alice. The sleeves are longer and I'll probably snap a photo or two when they're finished. Thanks for asking!
